face/grain
SURF is reversible. There is no "face" except in a technical sense. As standard, the technical face of the fabric is rolled inward. The fabric is dipped in soil-release finish, making either side useable as the face. In some conditions, especially in raking light, the more textured side may scatter the light and give a better appearance. Whichever side is chosen as the face, it should be used as the face throughout the project. Also, it is important to match the direction of the fabric grain, as it is possible for the eye to detect. When properly installed, SURF does not wrinkle along the track edge, a common problem with other widespan fabrics.

lining
SURF combines maximum visual opacity with maximum acoustic transparency within the limitations of currently available technology. Many systems do not require liner fabric if Surf is specified, but in some cases where the fabric is applied in direct contact with yellow fiberglass and/or unpainted wood framing, it may be necessary either to use a liner fabric or to paint the framing and substitute white acoustic board. Please note that white acoustic board generally eliminates the need for any liner fabric and the labor and cost of double-tucking. One brand is Whispertone® Wallboard from Johns Manville; call (800) 426-2435 for a stocking distributor. The cost is comparable to standard yellow fiberglass.

track systems
SURF has been installed both stapled with a wood framing system and also using all major track systems, including Eurospan, Novawall, Whisperwalls, SnapTex, Fabritrak and Stretchwall. If you have used other installation methods or track systems, please let us know; we'd love to hear about your experience.
